3 grabs a piece of the iPhone pie

Tired of waiting for its own licensing contract with Apple, 3 Mobile is launching a range of plans geared towards iPhone users with unlocked devices.

Despite heavy campaigning through its customer base, 3 is the only of the four major Australian mobile carriers to not have a license to sell the iPhone.

3 is offering higher data usage allowances of up to 2GB with its plans, most likely as an attempt to encourage customers to switch over from the current carriers, which recently have been under fire about the amount of data they provide.
The plans start at a $49 monthly cap, which provides $350 worth of talk and texts and 1GB of data.

The only legal way to unlock an iPhone in Australia is to buy one pre-paid through Optus, then pay an extra $80 to unlock it. Customers will pay about $809 for an 8GB device and $929 for a 16 GB with this method.

3 will begin offering these plans on Monday, August 4.
