IBM introduces BI for mainframe

Following the European Union’s ratification of IBM's purchase of Cognos in January, the firm has now combined Cognos’ latest business intelligence (BI) system with its mainframe System z.

Cognos 8 Business Intelligence for Linux on System z will allow customers to report on and analyse transactional systems on mainframes.

The technology combination will improve data center efficiency because it should encourage the use of IBM’s Sytem z, which runs on little power at a small cost, said IBM.

Customer Indira Munjuluri, head of BI architecture at Satyam Computer Services, said the system will ensure, “customers can gain a single, current and consolidated view of business information to support operational processes and disperse to the right teams across the company for more effective-decision making.”

IBM introduced more that 600 new applications and solutions for the mainframe in 2007, bringing the total to more than 4,000 applications on the System z platform, it said.
