EDITOR'S NOTE

Good morning,

For those readers returning to work from vacation today, we hope you had a great festive season.

As well as today's news, I thought it might be useful to give you a sense of the most viewed articles on iTnews over the break:

- Alcatel-Lucent was found to have bribed foreign governments to win deals and fined US$137 million. iTnews noted that the offences occurred during the reign at Alcatel of the executives hired to run NBN Co. Days later our story was picked up in the mainstream press, drawing arguments from Opposition MP's and Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

- Vodafone customers have banded together to consider a class action suit over the performance of the company's mobile network.

- Skype went down prior to Christmas, a post-mortem revealing a bug in the most popular version of its client software. The company is now considering the introduction of automatic updates to prevent future outages.

- Australia's Department of Health and Ageing (DOHA) has again outsourced its IT operations to IBM without going to open tender, stretching out its relationship with Big Blue for 15 years in total. HP Enterprise Services, meanwhile, announced global deals with BP and NASA.

- Analyst group Forrester has warned about a long list of software licensing traps causing problems for enterprise buyers, whilst an audit of Commonwealth Government agencies has uncovered several examples of lax security and disaster recovery processes.

FEATURED COMMENT

"Licensing in general is a joke, every company has their own rules on licensing, it's a major headache figuring out what you need to buy to become compliant. It should be as simple as going to www.microsoft.com/licensing or www.vmware.com/licensing, picking what you want and you're done. "
