EDITOR'S NOTE

Good morning,

Microsoft has announced it will offer free, lightweight versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One Note as part of its Office 2010 strategy.

The Redmond-based company's decision to finally embrace online apps was no doubt spurred by Google's success with its free, online office productivity toolset, Google Docs.

Like Google, Microsoft hopes to profit from the move via its online advertising investments. The key question is - how much will these basic online versions of Office apps cannibalise sales of Microsoft's biggest cash-cow product?
