EDITOR'S NOTE

Good morning,

It was a weekend of outages to major websites and systems. Severe storms in the US took out an Amazon Web Services availability zone, dragging down Instagram, Netflix and Pinterest for hours.

Meanwhile, Qantas and other global airlines were hit by an outage to the hosted Amadeus booking system, while a second-long pause to Earth's atomic clocks caused havoc for some Java apps and MySQL platforms.
