EDITOR'S NOTE

Good afternoon,

As Telstra begins its first steps toward structural separation, the company has called on government for an 18-month exemption to proposed legal requirements it retain customer data.

Also from our Canberra correspondent John Hilvert comes criticism of a proposal to appoint a 'cyber czar' for Australia. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute has warned any such attempt would be impractical and cause delays in cybercrime investigations.
