Singapore judge sentences teen for Wi-Fi hack

18-month suspended sentence and 80 hours community service.

A Singaporean teenager who used his neighbour's Wi-Fi connection without permission has been given an 18-month suspended sentence.

Garyl Tan Jia Luo, 17, was also sentenced to 80 hours community service after he was found guilty of breaking Singapore's Computer Misuse Act.

He faces a possible sentence of up to three years and fine of 10,000 Singapore dollars (£3,300) if he reoffends.

Senior District Judge Bala Reddy cited a probation report saying that the youth had been addicted to internet gaming at the time of the offence, and that he had "few friends, if not none", according to Associated Press.

A second Singaporean is facing similar charges after he accessed someone else's Wi-Fi system 60 times.
