Huawei claims success with mobile video trial

Chinese firm brings streaming video to Europe.

Electronics giant Huawei has successfully completed a 3.6Mbps video trial in Europe. The test service uses HSDPA over the European UMTS 900MHz mobile infrastructure.

Huawei's system reuses the existing GSM 900 MHz frequencies and infrastructures including base station cabinets, antenna lines and power feeders.

The Chinese firm said this approach leads to a marked reduction in costs for operators offering wireless broadband services.

"We are glad to complete the interoperability testing successfully on UMTS 900MHz which will save deployment time and investment time for operators," said Hou Jinlong, vice president of Huawei's wireless product line.

Huawei has so far secured 35 commercial UMTS contracts and established strategic partnerships with 28 of the world's top 50 operators including Vodafone, Telefónica, France Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, KPN, Etisalat, China Mobile and China Unicom.
