50in HD TVs 'commonplace' by 2008

Samsung paints rosy picture for HD.

Televisions boasting 50in full high definition liquid crystal displays will be commonplace in homes within three years, Samsung Electronics predicted today.

"Large screen TV functions keep improving and the highly competitive marketplace will be focused on making larger panels with higher resolutions," said Souk Jun Hyung, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics LCD.

"The winning device in today's fierce competition will be the one that can best display full HD content. The main TVs in many homes in two to three years will be 50in-class and full HD is a must."

Delivering a presentation entitled Samsung's Business and Technology Strategy for Continuous Growth at Flat Panel Display International 2006, Souk said that he expected future display designs to cover a broad spectrum of applications.

"The screens will come in virtually any size for use at anytime, and anywhere," he said.

Samsung's eighth-generation LCD production line, scheduled to open in October 2007, will be capable of creating eight 46in panels or six 52in panels from a single glass substrate measuring 2,200mm by 2,500mm.

The production line will be able to process 50,000 glass substrates a month, or the equivalent of 3.6 million 52in panels annually.
