Cisco muscles up

The company revealed that Cisco will acquire SyPixx Systems of Waterbury, Conn., to deliver video surveillance as a part of an converged environment. Prior to the acquisition, SyPixx was an independent developer of video technology that works with legacy analog surveillance systems to allow them function on an open IP network.

Cisco will add SyPixx to its Emerging Markets Technology Group. The company said that the purchase gives it the flexibility to offer customers better integration between existing video surveillance systems and other security applications on the network.

"An IP network can be a platform for helping to protect a company's information and digital assets," said Marthin De Beer, vice president of Cisco's emerging technology unit. "Through the acquisition of SyPixx, Cisco will begin to show how the network can also be a platform for enhancing the safety of people and the protection of physical assets."
