Tokyo police arrest trio accused of Softbank extortion

By

Tokyo police have arrested three men on suspicion of attempted extortion from Softbank BB, the parent company to Yahoo BB.

The trio, who have not been named, were trying to extort up to three billion yen (around $14.7 million) from Softbank BB, after they claimed to have personal details on around 4.6 million Yahoo BB customers.

The three men are said to have contacted Softbank last month with a
request for investment in a telecoms venture, in return for the
details, which were stored on various DVDs and CDs.

Softbank said the disks contain details of Yahoo BB customers, including name, address, phone number and email
addresses, and that no debit/credit card data was involved.

Police said it will take some time for it to investigate the disks
confiscated from the men, but if the details are correct, it could be
Japan's largest personal data loss.
