Microsoft will bring aboard more customers to trial its next-generation enterprise security services under a formal preview program.

Microsoft Windows Defender ATP hits public preview

Announced in March this year, the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection
(ATP) program has been in private preview with select enterprise customers around the world. Windows enterprise and security group head Rob Lefferts said the service currently protects more than half a million endpoints.

The security service features a built-in endpoint behavioural sensor in Windows 10 that logs security events and potential threat activity.

This data is sent to customers' private and isolated cloud Windows Defender ATP instances, where data analytics is used to translate behavioural signals into insights, detections and recommended responses to threats.

Community threat intelligence collected from Microsoft researchers and its security team is pooled with information provided by partners to further help spot threats in the Windows Defender APT telemetry.

Windows Defender ATP is not available on the release version of Windows 10 or for older versions of Microsoft's desktop operating system.

Preview program participants must use early-release versions of Windows 10 such as the Insider build 14332 or later, or the forthcoming Anniversary update.

Triallists must also be prepared to exchange Windows Defender APT data with the Microsoft Azure cloud.
