CIO quits Communications Department

Long-serving Department of Communications CIO Lee Di Berardino has resigned to take up an executive role within Defence’s CIO Group (CIOG).

The Department of Defence confirmed that Di Berardino joined the team on 14 July, and has assumed the new title of assistant secretary overseeing the service management branch with an SES level one status.

He will work for ICT operations chief and Major General Mark Milford within CIOG.

"Lee has the overarching accountability of the Defence ICT Service Desk. He is also responsible for ensuring that the organisation is prepared, and can support new ICT capabilities going into service," a spokesperson for the Department told iTnews.

Di Berardino ends more than six years at the Department of Communications but continues a 14 year tenure in the Commonwealth public service.

Most recently he oversaw the roll out of a HD teleworking solution for use in the office and residents of staff, expanded the virtualisation of the Department’s server fleet and managed the shift to a new internet gateway.

The Comms department would not be drawn on Di Berardino’s departure or any interim or full time replacements appointed to the role.

"The Department is currently undergoing an organisational restructure and all positions have yet to be finalised," said a spokesperson.

Communications is experiencing a major reduction in staff numbers, which is expected to shrink its workforce by up to 25 percent. Most of its 550 staff are being asked to re-apply for their jobs.
