CIO leaves Macquarie Uni

Macquarie University CIO Marc Bailey has left the institution to take up a new position at not-for-profit IT infrastructure provider Intersect.

Bailey will start his role as chief operating officer at the NSW-based eResearch support agency next month.

Made up of NSW’s major universities, Intersect acts as a coordinating body, pooling the universities' computing resources and acting as an interface into facilities like Canberra’s National Computational Infrastructure (NCI).

“I very much look forward to bringing entrepreneurial passion and commitment to growing Intersect’s eResearch contribution and impact,” Bailey said in a statement.

Macquarie University is currently searching for a permanent CIO. Jeff Stewart will stand in as interim CIO in the meantime.

Bailey’s former boss, Macquarie Uni COO Dr Paul Schreier, publically thanked him for his four and a half years heading up IT at the organisation.

“Expectations of digital service among Australian university students and staff have increased greatly over the last four years and the university has implemented many improvements to our IT environment, from a reliable cloud-based (Gmail) email solution, to a virtual desktop for students (iLab), and the introduction of ask.mq to deal with people's queries quickly,” he said.

During his time at Macquarie, Bailey oversaw the centralisation of the university’s customer relationship management system and the consolidation of more than 30 disparate IT teams.

Bailey is the second high-profile university CIO to change jobs in recent weeks. In late May, the Australian National University confirmed CIO Peter Nikoletatos had departed the organisation. His next moves are currently unknown.
