Verizon has doubled the floor space in its Fyshwick data centre in Canberra, on the back of increased government and enterprise demand.

Verizon adds more floor space in Canberra

First mooted in 2010, the Fyshwick data centre is one of two Verizon facilities in Canberra.

It serves mainly government customers such as the Department of Defence, Medicare, AusAid, Tourism Australia, the Attorney-General's office and the Federal Police.

The Fyshwick data centre is connected to the federal Intra-Government Communications Network (ICON) that provides point-to-point passive fibre links throughout the ACT.

Verizon now has just under 7000 square metres of floor space in Australia in three data centres located in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

The company also owns a tenth stake in the Southern Cross Cable System, the only data cables connecting Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
