Domino's chief named Retail CIO of the Year

Domino’s Pizza’s chief information officer Wayne McMahon has been voted the Retail sector CIO of 2012 for successfully implementing an infrastructure-as-a-service model in less than 10 weeks.

McMahon was honoured at the inaugural iTnews Benchmark Awards ceremony held at Melbourne’s Grand Hyatt.

His project was judged ahead of those led by McDonald’s CIO Henry Shiner and RedBalloon head of technology Paul Keen by both an iTnews judging panel and a panel of CIO peers.

In his application, McMahon said moving to a hosted model enabled Domino’s to build digital offerings more rapidly, boosting the pizza chain’s digital revenue as a percentage of its overall revenue by more than 10 percent.

The “cost-neutral” project was expected to save the company $1 million over three years. Judges applauded the Domino’s cloud project for demonstrating “substantial, calculable savings”.

In accepting the award, McMahon paid tribute to technology partner Telstra, his CEO and his team.

"I would like to thank my team," McMahon said. "Great execution takes design and planning.

"When I joined Domino's, [the project] was left of field ... but once I explained to them what I was doing, they made it happen."
