Apple drops 4G claim from iPad marketing

Apple has quietly dropped the claim in some nations that its latest iPad is “4G”, but continues to use the term across much of Europe.

As first reported by 9to5 Mac Apple on Saturday exchanged ‘4G’ for the more neutral term ‘cellular’ to describe its latest iPad on its US and Canadian websites. 

The change in marketing follows complaints across the world after Australia's competition watchdog sued Apple in March, alleging its 4G radios were incompatible with local mobile networks. 

The only carriers that did support Apple’s 4G radios were in the US and Canada.

Other countries where Apple dropped references to 4G over the weekend include Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and Ireland.

Apple, however, continues to use 4G for the latest iPad in, for example, France, Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

A lawyer from Sweden's consumer protection agency previously told iTNews that no carrier in Europe supported Apple's 4G radios.
