Telstra insurance cover pays for thieves' internet use

Option for iPhone buyers caught by 12-month warranty.

Telstra will cover smartphone users whose devices are lost or stolen for up to $800 of unauthorised calls or internet use through an insurance product launched today.

The 'premium care – mobile insurance' product was underwritten by insurer CGU.

Users of smartphones contracted to a Telstra postpaid plan for less than six months could take up the insurance for $14.95 a month.

A 'basic' insurance product for non-smartphone devices was also available for $9.95 a month.

The insurance was not available to prepaid customers, those with 3G dongles/data cards or tablet users.

Both policy tiers covered "theft, accidental loss or accidental damage".

But only the higher 'smart cover' product aimed at smartphone users included cover for "mechanical/electronic breakdown or failure".

That appeared partially aimed at iPhone users who were offered only one-year warranties on handsets bundled with 24-month contracts.

The telco's product disclosure statement [pdf] indicated that smartphone users whose devices broke down outside of the manufacturers' warranty could be covered for up to $2,000 in repairs or replacement costs, as long as they paid for the insurance.

The Age reported in February that iPhone users would be slugged at least $270 to have their handset repaired outside the warranty period.

Telstra said in the product disclosure that the telco would decide whether to try and repair a handset or just replace it.

Insured users with handsets lost or stolen overseas would be paid less than half of what they would if the device theft or loss was in Australia.

However, affected Telstra users overseas could claim some of the cost of buying or renting an "emergency handset" until they arrived back in Australia to lodge their insurance claim.

Claims could only be lodged by phone during business hours. After hours incidents were captured through an online interface.

That is ridiculous... such bad value. Like those credit card repayment insurances.

Most home contents insurers will insure your smartphone (or any portable gadget) outside the home, anywhere in the world, for about $5 per $1,000 insured, per month.

$15 per month over 2 years is $360 which after premium investment returns of say 10% pa is around $411.80. To insure a $600 phone this implies a claim rate of 69% of the value of the phone (before costs of insurance are taken out - but then if TLS outsources manufacturing to someone else the incremental cost of insurance would be a c5% commission plus minimal overheads)

What is needed is the ability for any registered owner of an IMEI (the serial number of a phone) to identify the owner of the IMSI (serial number of the sim card who's sim is in the phone.

This way if a phone is stolen and someone is stupid enough to put their sim in it, then you can locate and identify the thief.

Eliminating theft (lost phones), then there is breakages-you cannot tell me (and be believed) that 69% of phones break over a 2 year period.

Answering to adavion...

Telcos already know who has what sim in which phone.
The reason why they cannot disclose that info is because of the Privacy Law.

Telcos has the ability to locate you, find out where you are going from the sites you hop on and off from (triangulation prediction) and disconnect your phone entirely from the network.

Unfortunately Telcos cannot action some of these features because of the Telecommunications Act.

But then again we can have anarchy?

Are we getting ripped off or what? Classic Telstra- charge more than anywhere on earth. Take a look at www.ensquared.com for a US comparison.

Ensquared.com provides a 2 Year Phone Insurance product covering Lost, Stolen & Accidental Damage (spills & drops) for $99.99 (prepaid). It comes with 3 x $1000 claims.

This product works out to be $8.35 USD per month which is around $7 cheaper a month than Telstra. This means that Telstra are once again taking us for a ride.

Personally I would take the risk and not get this 'premium care – mobile insurance' from Telstra.
