ANZ online banking suffers short outage

Systems reboot brings services back online.

ANZ customers have become the latest victims in a litany of online banking outages, with services unavailable for just over an hour during the middle of business hours today.

An ANZ Bank spokesman confirmed that the outage was not scheduled.

Services had been down since prior to 11am, before IT engineers at the bank rebooted the servers operating the service at 11:40am. Services were back online by 12:05pm.

A message on the ANZ web site

Can I say say for the record, that the amount of redundancy in these sites is ridiculous. This site and the Westpac site going down due to a server or site outage is ridiculous in this day and age. Look, I know that Load Balancers cost money - and that having multiple sites seems quite expensive, but when you start talking about impacts like Westpac's, and this one to a lesser extent - then why is it coming down to a 'server reboot' or 'AC failure' to bring a bank down???

Many of the designs I have done & implemented have included multi-site redundancy, with load balancing or failover options as necessary. Ideally LB is more applicable in this area - and I believe the Westpac guys should have a look at better options for Failover (if it takes 'that' long... that a day's outage almost is better option???)

A dual DC site environment, with loadbalancing between them - and enough provisioned redundancy as necessary to move 'critical' systems (okay, Internet Banking is more lower than ATM or EFT transactions = sorry all) as priority to the 2nd site - it's NOT rocket science in this day and age.

Enough of my rant, just sick of the banks posting profit margins (in the billions) while still whinging about spending on ICT... duhhh!!!!
