Equinix to build New York data centre

Pumps $240m into new and expanded facilities.

Data centre operator Equinix will invest about $140 million building its eighth IBX data centre in the New York metropolitan area.

The company said overnight that the new facility would open in the second quarter of 2012 and support mostly financial sector customers.

It would have a total floor space in excess of 35,000 square metres when all extensions were built, although it would launch with just under 15,000 square metres.

The company did not break down exactly how much of this would be saleable technical floor space.

In addition, Equinix announced a $30 million expansion of its Chicago-3 data centre and a $70 million investment in Frankfurt-2 in Germany.

Equinix has invested $72 million in Australia building a Sydney3 data centre.
