Heads to 11,000 square metres on east coast.

NextDC has entered into a “non-binding agreement” to acquire a site in Sydney where it planned to construct a 3,000 to 5,000 square metre data centre.

The company did not disclose the location for the data centre, but said it expected to complete the acquisition by the end of April.

"After a comprehensive evaluation of alternatives in Sydney, we are very pleased to have found this highly strategic location for our future Sydney data centre," NextDC chief Bevan Slattery said in a statement.

"We are now working closely with the vendors, expert consultants and urban utilities to complete due diligence requirements as efficiently and effectively as possible."

The up to 5,000 square metre data centre would include “high density technical space” as well as office and plant space.

The Sydney location would round out the company’s ambitions for the east coast of Australia, which included locations in Brisbane and the Port of Melbourne, and gave it a total of 11,000 square metres to work with.

Recent floods in Queensland had pushed NextDC’s March launch for Brisbane back to May.
