New backdoor Mac Trojan in the works

DarkCometX coming soon.

The authors of an old Windows Trojan, DarkComet Remote Access Tool, claim to be working on one for MacOS X systems, called DarkCometX.

DarkComet-RAT’s (Remote Administration Tool) website explains that the Windows tool was designed to make (sic) “hundreds of functions stealthly and remotely without any kind of autorisation in the remote process.”

Sophos security adviser Chester Wisniewski earlier this week heralded the rare discovery of a new backdoor Trojan designed for MacOS X systems.

Wisniewski had suggested the origins for “Blackhole Remote Access Trojan (RAT)” for MacOS X could be found in DarkComet-RAT.

Blackhole RAT’s functions included issuing restart and shutdown commands and running arbitrary shell commands amongst others.

The author of DarkComet-RAT however took exception to Wisniewski’s classification, adding that the rightful heir to its Windows parent was still under development and had a better interface.

“While the BlackHole RAT Trojan seems to be copying the behavior of DarkComet, the lack of functionality and the unsophisticated user interface clearly offended the author,” Wisniewski said.

While the functionality that DarkComet-RAT describes could lend itself to nefarious activities, Wisniewski noted that technically, it is not illegal to write a Trojan.

“It's all in what you do with it,” he said.

Now that someones actually making malware to target the MacOS, does this mean the Mac has finally made it?

PC users give Mac users a competitive advantage. That's twice in a week someone has reportedly been working on a virus for Mac. Really funny. You still need to enter the admin password to install it.

It's a fact that 95% of people are broke at age 65 but everyone gives financial advise too. Not sure why non users are always compaining about Apple. We'd still be carrying a blackberry, walkman and laptop around if wasn't for the 21st century.

@Bob, there is a slight difference between viruses and malware. Malware (trojan) is typically installed by the user. Looks good, but comes with unexpected 'benefits'. So, not 'really funny' I would have thought.

'Still' carrying Blackberrys? It's the number one device in government and enterprise (western) world-wide so why wouldn't people be carrying it? It's true there's been a drop-off in total blackberry and iPhone sales, but it all that means today is that there are 3 players with near enough to equal share.

If you like style, it's hard to look past Apple and Android. If you like function, then there is a lot to choose from. I find Windows 7 x64 superior to MacOS or iOS, but it's mostly preference. To get my iMac to stop treating me like a child, I have to use the shell. In Windows, I can still operate in the GUI. I'd like to apologise to Mac users for being a Mac owner and not being a huge fan.
