Queensland Police are targeting motorists using mobile phones while they are driving.

The traffic blitz targeting mobile phone use will be over the next few days, according to a statement from the Queensland Police Service.

Senior sergeant Paul Biggin, from Queensland Police's Regional Traffic Coordinator’s Office, said it was irresponsible and dangerous for people to use their mobile phones while driving.

“Anything that takes your concentration away from the road and driving is a recipe for disaster," Biggin said. "Road conditions and situations can change in a blink of an eye and your full focus should be on your driving."

“If you want to use your mobile phone you must be stationary and completely off the roadway. You cannot use your mobile phone while waiting at traffic lights as this is also an offence."

Biggin said this included sending and receiving text messages. According to the statement, the penalty for using a mobile phone while driving was a fine of $225 and loss of three points.
