iPad owners a 'selfish elite'

Critics mostly Linux users, study finds.

A study of 20,000 US consumers has shown some interesting personality traits in those who love or loathe the iPad.

The iPad Opinion Profile from consumer research firm MyType suggests that iPad owners are more than six times as likely to be wealthy, highly educated and sophisticated than non-owners.

But they are also an unkind "selfish elite" not given to acts of altruism.

Contrary to the advertising, iPad owners are also less likely to be interested in the arts and music, and more in finance and business.

By contrast, iPad critics value self-direction and shun conformity, and are interested in video games, computers, electronics, science and the internet.

The bulk are Linux users, followed by Mac and PC owners. iPad critics are also more likely to be atheists and childless.

"The characteristics of a product's early adopters define its image, or at least make a strong statement about how the product is perceived," said MyType in a blog post.

"The results of the profile suggest that the tablet computer is seen more as a power tool for elites than as the newest gadget for technology geeks."

IPad owners are twice as likely to be in their 40s than non-owners, and Apple seems to be having problems with the youth market since teenagers are four times as likely to criticise the device than 40 year-olds, the data shows.

Some 54 percent of those surveyed have no interest in getting an iPad, while 11 percent described it as 'silly' and six percent had not heard of it, the latter described in the report as having "kind and humble" personalities. One in 20 respondents are waiting for the next model.

Ethnic minorities are also far more aware of the iPad. Korean and Chinese Americans are eight and five times more likely to be aware of the device than natives, and African and Middle Easterners twice as likely.

So basically

If you’re a 40 year old selfish pratt who works in banking and finance with no interest in technology, science or any pursuit that makes you actually think; following only your religious faith and spawning selfish f-ed up brat children (who incidentally hate you and your iPad) to carry on your heritage, because that is what everyone else is doing THE IPAD IS FOR YOU.

However if you’re not yet mentally dead and like to engage in art, literature and culture; are happy to learn, think and criticize society and it’s norms rather than obey some fanciful notion of deities or what politicians tell you and are keenly interested in advancement of human society through technology, while taking time to consider your ability to support and raise children then you’d best stick with the open source technology and community you already support.

@dave, the article says "highly educated and sophisticated than non-owners", so it's more a case of being a shallow gadget freak versus the culturally sensitive humanitarian.

Basically if you're extreme enough to LOVE or HATE the iPad, then you're a freak - albeit two different types of freaks.

Most people don't fall into either of these categories...

I tried to read through the article and find some kind of witty retort... it's just awful.

I think I'll just declare I'm an Apple fanboy and live with it.

I'd hope that I'd be one of the 4% independent geeks.

Looks a lot like this study from 2005 into the sorts who drive 4WDs in the city.

http://www.theage.com.au/ed_docs/4WD.pdf

Looks like 4WD dealers should bundle iPads with their vehicles because they're selling to the same market.

I guess there are always exceptions, like the 90 year old who has had six children (not selfish, 40 or childless) - and really likes to use her iPad to get the news, keep in touch with friends and family, and display her photos. It's light, easy to use and near-perfect for the jobs she wants it to do.

Yes, RDEFCON1, +1

Says it all, so why are we wasting our time? Move along, nothing to see, etc.

And Brett - what happens if the couple get pregnant AND religious? One iPad for sale? I don't think so.
