Whirlpool DDoS attacks to be reported to police

Site down for second consecutive day.

Australian broadband forum Whirlpool was today hit with a distributed denial of service attack, the second day in a row the popular site was attacked.

The site that was down for much of yesterday morning due to a DDoS attack from IP addresses in Denmark and the US was attacked again from multiple international addresses at 10pm last night and remains crippled this morning.

The site's founder expects it to be out of action for much of the day.

UPDATE: Whirlpool came back online just after 6pm.

Lorenzo Modesto, chief operating officer at Whirlpool's hosting provider Bulletproof Networks, said the offending IP addresses were blocked within 20 minutes of the second attack starting. He said he has enough data on the attacks to pass on a solid lead to the Australian Federal Police.

"As a result of the latest Distributed Denial of Service attack, which started at approximately 9.40pm on Tuesday the 29th of June, Bulletproof Networks and Whirlpool will be reporting the recent DDoS activity targeting Whirlpool to the Australian Federal Police as defined under Commonwealth legislation within Part 10.7 - Computer Offences of the Criminal Code Act 1995, including denial of service attacks and distributed denial of service attacks using botnets," Bulletproof told iTnews in a statement.

"All relevant information gathered to date, including all documented source IP addresses, the identified platform (mostly Plesk) and the vulnerability, as well as all important forensic data gathered from some compromised servers that have been preserved as a crime scene following the attacks, will be passed on to the relevant authorities so that they can formalise the matter and follow the relevant processes."

The NSW Police will be first to receive the matter.

"As each state and territory in Australia has its own legislated computer-related offences which are similar to the Commonwealth legislation, the matter will be reported to the NSW Police to then escalate to the AFP."

Modesto told iTnews that Bulletproof can't afford for the attack to distract the company from customers such as BlueScope Steel, Borders and DMG Radio.

In a swipe at the Federal Government he said it should focus on such attacks instead of internet filters: "It would be great if there were a Government initiative that effectively assisted with this type of event rather than everyone's favourite spams or scams, but unfortunately it won't so they've got to be dealt with through the proper process and with the relevant authorities [police]".

Yesterday, Modesto joked that "20,000 spams and scams coming through the portal" were responsible for the outage.

In a humorous aside last night, Whirlpool founder Simon Wright tweeted that "someone out there doesn't want geeks to talk about stuff! What an evil villain. Somebody call Batman."

"Paul Grenfell, your dreaming heavy penalties i doubt it. A murderer gets less time nowadays, so hacker will just get a bad boy slap at the local cop shop if that. Maybe everyone needs to stop ..."

Doesn't surprise me really -Whirlpool really pisses many people off with their Censorship of any comments or threads they don't like - or that iiNet and Internode don't like to be precise.

Bag Telstra or Optus and you get applauded on Whirlpool - bag iiNet and your posts and username get deleted before you can even mutter "censorship".

Yes yes, that is quite humorous and here I was thinking all Whirlpool knew about humor was candy, I'm impressed. No really I am.

So Digger11 endorses breaking the law if you are DDoS'ing a site like whirlpool, but copying tv shows or downloading a movie online is a big no no, interesting moral stances you live by. Btw could it be your accounts have been deleted for breaking the rules on profane language on the WP forums Digger11 not just expressing your opninion, come on tell the truth now.

WP logic: "Doesn't surprise me really" = "endorses breaking the law"

I'm not defending Digger here, I've read some other comments form this joker but this is one I'm going to have to agree on and there was nothing in that post that indicated Digger endorsed breaking the law if you are DDoS'ing.

Have to agree with Hubert and disagree with Mordd. Just because someone says, 'doesn't surprise me if something happens' doesn't mean that person endorses breaking the law.

But then I've seen many people on Whirlpool use strawman tactics and misrepresenting people to make their attacks that much easier.

Lol, here come the Trolls, disgruntled, banned, binned, ex WPs..School Leavers, "down with Rools man"
Look , if you dont like like it , clear off.. You dont have to paticipate, its freedom of choice.. But for the Many, many, thousands of others , we appreciate WP and its "Rools"..

Yeh sure I was deliberately trolling Digger there, he enjoys it and has baited me and others on here on far more occasions. Yes "Doesn't surprise me really" = "endorses breaking the law" is a massive stretch of logic, a very tongue in cheek comment designed to get at the fact that for all the fanboi's on WP there are just as many anti-fanboi crusaders out there who make themselves look just as dumb as the fanboi's most of the time.

For the record im not a WP fanboi, just an iiNet/ITNews fanboi.

@ Paul. LOL @ you. I'm a well known contributor to Whirlpool but I'm using another nick just because I want to remain anonymous. And my Aura is bright on Whirlpool and not a banned or binned user. I don't want my aura to plummet because I post negative comments on iTNews, hence the anonymity.

I hope the little tools that did this get caught. No one is *forced* to use Whirlpool, and there are plenty of other forums and IRC channels where script kiddies and real h@k3rs can hang out with the h@rd c0re and talk about l33ching all they like. Attacking Whirlpool is just the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. I hope Bulletproof find and sue these tossers for damages.

yeah Paul thanks for your insight and words of wisdom keep up the good work soldier, I'll be sure to pass that message onto myself when I invent a time machine and go back 3 years and 1 day before I did clear off.

Seriously I cant believe how many people defend wp so vehemently, it's like a cult, I haven't even this level of fanboyism even in the console wars but personally I just think this is just Stockholm syndrome case

WP often helps folks to safety from their under-performing or over-charging ISPs and telcos, and lets them canvass views on networking and home theatre gear. Yes, it has its regular whingers like any other watering hole, but overall it's pretty useful. There is never a justification for DDoS attacks. Hope they catch the culprits soon. It will be very interesting to see whether they are associated with any political or media groups, but they're just as likely to have simply targeted WP because they're aren't so many public phones to vandalise anymore.
Paul Grenfell
Jun 30, 2010 3:02 PM
Yes, and when they are caught, they wont be liable to heavy penalties, like they would , if they were targetting, say a govt Dept or something. Maybe just fooling around and playing safe with a soft target like WP. Even so , there is still no justification , nor any purpose achieved.. Just a waste of time, both for the hackers, and for WP users.

@ Paul. How is the DDoS wasiting time for WP users when Whirlpool is down? I would have thought this would be a good time for you to do your job or something else that's time better spent than instaad of wasting time on Whirlpool.

Hiro, i all the time in the World, and alone at home is boring.. WP keeps my day alive. I and many others have benefited a great deal from feedback on WP.. There is invaluable information on Products, Services, News and feedback from Consumers, Techs.etc.
Equally so, why are you wasting you valuable time here?

I dont know if thsi true or not, but this comment was made at ZGeek.com
"Lorenzo Modesto, chief operating officer at Whirlpool's hosting provider Bulletproof Networks, said the offending IP addresses were traced to www.zgeek.com and blocked within 20 minutes of the second attack starting. He said he has enough data on the attacks to pass on a solid lead to the Australian Federal Police."

@ Paul. I'm not the one who made the claim that this DDoS attack has wasted time for WP users. That was you. If anything, this gives time for WP users to do something contructive instead of WASTING time on a forum.

And if you are alone at home and nothing to do, then how about doing something constructive instead of waiting for a forum to come back up. As some people might say, you need to get out more.

Before that rumour spreads, I'd point out that someone's put the zgeek reference into the original report.

The actual quote was "Lorenzo Modesto, chief operating officer at Whirlpool’s hosting provider Bulletproof Networks, said the offending IP addresses were blocked within 20 minutes of the second attack starting."

At least Whirlpoolers don't waste their time multiple posting under different nics supporting themselves on, ah yes, forums. The ACL muat be paying a fortune to the Russian mafia to get their revenge for the Pat Robertson postings on theirs.

Paul Grenfell, your dreaming heavy penalties i doubt it. A murderer gets less time nowadays, so hacker will just get a bad boy slap at the local cop shop if that. Maybe everyone needs to stop relying on computers so much, like i said go talk to the missus. I agree with Hiro on pretty much everything
