Gillard to be Prime Minister

Eyes on Comms, Finance portfolios.

The Communications portfolio has been thrown wide open under the new leadership of Julia Gillard, who usurped Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today in an uncontested party room spill.

Gillard was announced as the new leader of the party just after 9:30am today, with Wayne Swan also uncontested as Deputy Prime Minister, after Prime Minister Rudd decided he did not have the numbers to contest.

Gillard is yet to announce whether she will reshuffle the front bench. Key to iTnews readers is whether the new leader - who put her hand in unopposed - will make any changes to the Communications (DBCDE) and Finance portfolios, joint stakeholders in the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Currently these portfolios are held by Senator Stephen Conroy - a strong ally of Kevin Rudd, and Lindsay Tanner.

Former Shadow Communications Minister Kate Lundy showed her hand for the job early, tweeting last night with an hour of the Prime Minister announcing his deputy's challenge.

"I will be voting for Julia Gillard in the l'ship ballot. She will be an inspiring PM!"

Alongside the NBN, Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner was the architect of cost-cutting measures within government agencies that took a dramatic effect on IT spending in Canberra.

Senator Conroy, meanwhile, would more likely to be remembered as the architect of the controversial plan to filter the internet should he lose his portfolio.

Stay tuned for more...

Rudd's lack of fighting spirit in not contesting his disloyal colleagues attempt to gain power can be viewed in two ways. Firstly, he could be seen as lacking guts and fighting spirit, or secondly he could be seen as doing what he thinks will help Labor get re-elected.

Or perhaps he did a final backflip after declaring he would contest the ballot.

Probably more important, though, is the replacement of the pugnaciously incompetent Conboy in the comms portfolio.

The man talked the talk, but when the going got tough he ran like a coward. Sums up his term as Prime Minister nicely.

Anyone who backs down like that without a fight does not deserve to govern this country.

God help us all !!!

It's not her backstabbing or annoying accent, her horrible ranga hair or her socialist views that I can't stand.
Its that she is a bl#@#$@ lawyer !!! The most despised bottom feeding profession out there.

Also, I heard a very very top level secret that I shouldn't post here - but seeing it's Friday and if you promise not to tell anyone I will. I got this from a parliamentary insider, so please don't pass it on to anyone. The red hot rumour is " that she is the 1st female Prime Minister of Australia !".

Please keep this very very secret - I know I can trust you.

I think you'll find she's a politician @Digger. That's got to be at least one rung up the ladder!

I remember the "God help us all !!!" rants from the southern USA rednecks upon learning that Obama might be elected president. From memory, he was a lawyer once too :-).
