Microsoft has announced its intention to replace 14.1 million power cables for its Xbox gaming console, after the discovery of a rare component failure in older model consoles that can pose a potential fire hazard.
The failure has been experienced in fewer than one in 10,000 consoles with damage usually limited to the console itself, according to a Microsoft statement.
David McLean, regional director of Microsoft’s home entertainment division in Australia and New Zealand, said that there had only been one reported incident in Australia involving minor carpet burn.
Of 30 instances reported worldwide, seven customers reported sustaining a minor burn to their hand and 23 reported smoke damage or minor damage to carpet or entertainment units.
McLean confirmed that only consoles manufactured before 23 October 2003 were affected by the fault and required replacement cords. In Europe, consoles manufactured before 13 January 2004 also require the replacement.
McLean declined to reveal the expected cost of the replacements, saying only that the money would be well spent if it gave customers peace of mind.
Microsoft has advised that replacement cords can be obtained by visiting www.xbox.com or phoning 1800 073 897.
While waiting for the new cord, the company also advises consumers to turn off their Xbox consoles when not in use.
