Crunch: Apple iPad special

Does it bleed?

The worst kept secret ever, Apple's iPad, was announced this week by Steve Jobs.

The Crunch asked our editorial team, who play with fancy new gadgets all the time, about their first impressions.

But rumours of an Apple iPad go back many years. Mad TV predicted an iPad all the way back in 2006. Unfortunately their specs were a fraction off the mark.

I really loved the concept of an Apple tablet however now that the details are out, I can't see myself buying one. There is too much overlap between the functionality provided by the iPhone and Macbook. The iPad falls far short of being a replacement for a laptop and it way too big to be a phone and can't make calls (except maybe VOIP) so it can only serve as a giant, overpriced iPod touch. If it was an Intel-based device which was capable of running a full-blown OS, it would be top of my shopping list.

Having said all that, I have no doubt the first model will sell millions. This is mainly because the average consumer will see it as an alternative to their current laptop and won't realise its vast limitations, much the same way many of my friends/colleagues bought Macbooks and rarely ever boot into OSX.
