Symantec FileStore promises greater cloud control

Cloud storage platform can scale up to 2PB.

Enterprise security vendor Symantec has unveiled FileStore (PDF), a new system designed for companies of all sizes looking for greater control and availability of cloud-based services.

FileStore is a software appliance that can help enterprises better manage their cloud-based storage requirements in a secure manner, according to Symantec.

The platform-independent software solution is combined with commodity hardware to offer cost savings by streamlining use, and scaling up and down depending on need, said the firm. A single FileStore system can scale up to 16 nodes and 2PB of total storage.

Symantec itself deploys FileStore with over 40PB of online storage for more than nine million users, the vendor said.

"FileStore delivers new innovations in storage architecture driven largely by internet, service provider and software-as-a-service companies," said Jeff Reed, vice president of clustered storage at Symantec.

"By combining commodity hardware with high-value storage software, these companies are creating file-based storage architectures with equivalent performance and availability and at even larger scales than enterprises, but for a fraction of the cost."

Symantec FileStore is available now starting at US$6,995 (AU$7869) for the lowest installation of two nodes and two CPU sockets.
