iPhone scam referred to AFP: Cellnet

Brisbane-based Cellnet is the subject of a scam that tries to sell heavily discounted iPhones under the firm’s name via the Gumtree classifieds Web site.

A spokesperson for Cellnet this afternoon confirmed to iTnews that the company was aware of the scam and that it had been referred to the relevant authorities.

"We are aware of this, and the matter has been referred to Australian Federal Police and the Computer Crimes Unit," the spokesperson said.

iTnews also contacted the AFP to confirm whether an investigation into the incident has been launched.

The scam came to light earlier today via the broadband forum Whirlpool, after a user alleged they had been scammed $581 after trying to purchase a 16GB iPhone 3G from the melbourne.gumtree.com.au site.

The scammer allegedly runs under the name of "Sarah Reed" from Cellnet Telecommunications or MLN Mobile Products and uses an email address registered to the domain Live.com.au.
