EMC has updated its data protection and backup and recovery software.

EMC has rebranded its storage reporting software Backup Advisor as Data Protection Advisor v5.0 and expanded the software’s support for Vmware and EMC Celerra storage systems.

“With the new version, coverage is expanded, providing the benefits of faster decisions and improved cost reduction across more of the IT infrastructure,” said the storage firm in a statement.

Data Protection Advisor v5.0 will be available December 23rd 2008, as will a new edition of the firm’s backup application Networker, which will now support Microsoft Hyper-V virtual environments.

EMC has also added new capabilities to its data de-duplication product Avamar, adding increased reporting capacity.

“Advanced health check and email home alerts notify admiistrators of capacity-full and other conditions that help mitigate risk,” said EMC.

Enhanced security for the product includes 256-bit AES encryption, certificate based authentication and server auto-restart functionality, added the firm. The latest version of Avamar will be available from December 5th 2008.

An update to EMC data recovery product RecoverPoint will contain new CDP capabilities and contain support for the EMC Clariion storage product and will be available from the end of this week.
