EMC, BMC cosy up

US-based storage vendor EMC has partnered with BMC Software, in a worldwide deal to push storage management products to enterprise-based customers.

EMC has acquired the rights to BMC Software's PATROL Storage Manager range, while BMC will resell EMC ControlCenter gear, EMC said in a release to the Australian news media.

Joe Tucci, EMC president and CEO, said that the BMC partnership was his company's first reseller arrangement with an independent software vendor to market EMC ControlCenter as an exclusive storage resource management offering.

“This deal is indicative of the significant investments EMC has made to deliver functional, open, heterogeneous storage software,” Tucci said. He said BMC knew a lot about servers and applications, while EMC's expertise was in storage and storage networking.

The alliance would enable storage management packages to be offered which could handle “nearly every layer of the IT infrastructure”, Tucci said.

The two product ranges would eventually be integrated tightly, he added. EMC will provide maintenance, service and support to all current PATROL Storage Manager customers.

BMC may offer PATROL Storage Manager customers equivalent EMC ControlCenter licences providing a migration or upgrade path from PATROL Storage Manager. EMC and BMC Software will also co-operate on marketing and technology initiatives, EMC said.
