Cisco targets home market with Pure Networks buy

 

Cisco has thrown its chips in with the home market with the US$120 million acquisition of Pure Networks.

Pure does networking for computers in the home and already licenses its products to Linksys, a home networking firm that Cisco bought in 2003.

Cisco gave out some chuff about "Home Networking 2.0" in a statement about the acquisition. People will apparently will be linking an inconspicuous wealth of of electronic devices over their wireless home networks.

This means that not only would PCs and printers be accessed through a home network, but so would things like stereos and televisions.

Cisco described "Home Networking 2.0" vaguely as a home network that operated as the "base for new multimedia-enabled applications, tools and capabilities".

Ned Hooper, senior vice president for Cisco’s Corporate Development and Consumer Group, said in a statement that its products would be "paramount to achieving a satisfying consumer experience.”

He said Cisco's home networking devices would be easier to use after it had completed the acquisition, some time around the start of 2009. µ
