Dell rolls out touch-screen mod

Dell has released a new module to add multi-touch capibilities to its Latitude XT tablet..

The user-downloadable update will allow the tablet notebooks to accept multi-touch commands similar to those used in the iPhone and Voodoo Envy smartphones.

The company says that the multi-touch update will be the first ever offered for a full-sized tablet.

The multi-touch update will allow users to do such things as drag two fingers to scroll through the screen, spread two fingers apart to zoom in, and a special command can be assigned by the user to a two-tap gesture.

"We introduced the Latitude XT as a revolutionary product in the tablet space," said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president of Dell's product group.

"Today Dell is taking that commitment to a new level with multi-touch functionality."

The move is part of a larger effort by Dell to hype its new line of Latitude notebooks. The company expects to launch a new lineup in the coming weeks and expand the number of laptop models it offers by some 50 per cent.

The company also announced a 128 GB solid-state hard drive option. The larger drive will add at least US$649 to the system price and will only be offered on XPS and Alienware systems.
