Photos: Google's self-driving car enters first real build
First complete prototype unveiled.
Google yesterday took the wrapping off the first full prototype of its self-driving vehicle. The company has been testing autonomous cars for several years, and last May released its first mock-up of the vehicle. The prototype was a very early stage model, and didn't include things like headlights.
The first real build of the car was unveiled yesterday after Google spent the months since May testing all the various components involved in an autonomous car. The latest version combines all the systems needed to run the vehicle - such as steering, braking, sensors and computers. Google plans to test the car further on its off-road tracks over the Christmas break and hope to bring it to North Californian streets in the new year.
