EDITOR'S NOTE

Good morning,

Welcome to Cloud Week!

Yes, I hear you say, every bloody week has been cloud week since about 2008. But things have ramped up quite a bit in 2013, and this week we're sending our coverage into overdrive.

Last week, a swathe of big corporates went public with their Amazon Web Services deployments. This week we're looking at a cloud computing framework built as the hybrid contender - OpenStack.

First up today, Labs contributor Dez Blanchfield provides us a beginner's guide to OpenStack. He answers all the big questions - what is OpenStack? Who is behind it? How might it fit in your current infrastructure?

Later in the week Dez promises to return with instructions on how to install our very own super-shrunk OpenStack deployment. That's commitment, right there, folks!

We'll also attempt to quantify the growth of public cloud services during 2014 and ask important questions about what it means for our industry. How are the old guard responding? What does the flight to cloud mean for IT jobs, and what skills will you need to stay up-to-date?

We hope you enjoy the week ahead,

-- Brett Winterford
