EDITOR'S NOTE

Good morning,

Open source developers have claimed victory in a battle against the geospatial industry's biggest software vendor, in a David vs Goliath sized battle over standards.

Much like Microsoft's controversial, but ultimately successful attempt to have its document format accepted as an ISO/IEC standard, mapping giant Esri faced off against competitors and open source zealots to have its server API designated as an OGC standard.

The story once again raises questions as to what constitutes a standard, and what goal standards bodies should set before considering new ones.
