Gotalk, PBA in prepaid broadband push

Gotalk has partnered with iBurst operator Personal Broadband Australia (PBA) to offer a prepaid wireless broadband service.

The service, which Gotalk claims is the first of its kind in Australia, is charged from $0.115 per Megabit and comes with a free dialup account, broadband voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) account and VoIP soft phone.

Customers of the service are charged a 39c per day access fee and can use their own iBurst hardware or buy a range of USB, PCMCIA or desktop modems directly from Gotalk.

The Gotalk iBurst wireless broadband offers speeds of up to 1Mb/345 with no speed throttling and is available in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

Describing the deal, Gotalk CEO Steve Picton said that the economics of a prepaid model would accelerate the penetration of broadband around Australia.

PBA CEO Jonathan Withers said the association of PBA and Gotalk had started a new chapter in the Australian wireless broadband market.

In November Gotalk released a $49.95 VoIP phone, the ‘Phone Stick.’

The product consists of a USB memory stick with integrated VoIP circuits and software, which loads a softphone when inserted into a PC with Internet connectivity.
