Motorola launch mobile backup service

In a sign that content, mobility and storage technologies are converging, Motorola has announced the launch of a new backup and recovery service.

Motorola Backup allows users to wirelessly backup, retrieve and restore data from a mobile phone or SIM card without the use of a PC.

Using a Java-based application, users connect via the phone to Motorola’s Backup servers, initiating a backup session.

The service can also be operated from a PC via the www.motorolabackup.com website. Users can add, delete or update contacts and have the changes applied via the Backup service.

Andrew Volard, Managing Director, Motorola South Pacific, said Backup was an attempt to improve the way in which customers experience and interact with their mobile phones.

IDC mobility analyst Jerson Yau, said it was natural for enterprise-grade solutions to eventually be 'simplified' and passed on to consumers.

"These sort of solutions are indicators for service-level solutions, rather than hardware-level solutions as we expect hardware featuresets to be a platform of flexibility - therefore service-level solutions allows for greater end-user customisation," he said.

The new service will initially be offered via a free 30 day trial, with a subsequent monthly charge of $3 to maintain the service.

Backup is offered on most Motorola handsets, including Motorazr V3, V3i, V6, Motokrzr and Motoslvr L6 and L7.
