Vizrea calls up multimedia social networking

Vizrea has launched a social networking service that uses mobile phones, PCs and the internet to share video, photos, music, podcasts and blogs. 

The company also allows users to access their PC-based music content using a 3G or other high-speed mobile phone network, so that they can listen to songs in their digital library from any location.

The software uses a peer-to-peer connection to access the user's PC, although it will not be possible to share the music collection with other users because of copyright issues.

Users can set up their space on Vizrea by accessing the site online or by downloading software for their Symbian mobile phone or PC. The service is built on a free trial version of Vizrea Snap for cameraphone users.

The platform allows people to share and organise their content simultaneously, and a test showed a cameraphone picture being sent to another phone, the Vizrea website and being archived on the home PC from a single MMS message.

The service includes a personal mobile website to share pictures, video, audio and public or private comments, as well as a mobile messaging service that lets users send photos, video, audio and even collections of media to another mobile phone.

The site is not exclusive and users can share Vizrea content on other blogs or social networking sites and upload their content from blogs and other sites to Vizrea.

"If a user has invested a lot of time in another social networking site, such as MySpace, Xanga or Blogger, then we want Vizrea to work along with that," Steve Toutonghi, vice president of product management and services at Vizrea, told vnunet.com. 

Rob Enderle, principal analyst for the Enderle Group, said that users were looking for an easy way to share their media using a number of different connections. 

"With a variety of devices, media types and an increasing number of friends to share stuff with, the market is desperately looking for a comprehensive easy-to-use service that takes the complexity out of the media sharing, syncing and using experience," he said.

Vizrea is being launched with support for Symbian Series 60 second and third edition phones and Windows XP.

The service is free for the first 60 days at which point users will be charged for mobile messages and some premium features.
