Contractors say induction information delivered 'too fast'.

Rio Tinto is to launch an e-learning portal to enable prospective employees and contractors to get a head-start on their safety induction into the mine giant's iron ore sites.

The website, expected to be made publicly available this month, "will provide some of the training videos from ... inductions that people need to be familiar with to be able to enter any [Rio Tinto] site in the Pilbara" region of Western Australia, according to a newsletter (pdf).

"Whether you are about the become an employee with Rio Tinto or you are about to become an employee with a contractor who works on a Rio Tinto site, you will be able to look at the training manual prior to attending the training courses to become familiar with what's coming in the classroom," health, safety and environment training superintendent Trevor Hope said.

Hope said one of the reasons the portal was created was due to feedback from "Aboriginal contractors who told us that our safety induction ... is delivered too fast".

The newsletter that reveals the e-learning portal's creation — Milli Milli — highlights indigenous issues at Rio Tinto sites.

Rio Tinto said it would also "change the videos on the [e-learning] website so the training is delivered by Aboriginal presenters" later this year.

The site URL is expected to be http://www.riotintocommunities.scodle/
