Broadband blackspot in line for fibre.

Residents of the Canberra suburb of Gungahlin will be offered the opportunity to meet representatives of NBN Co next month ahead of the next generation network builder's planned rollout of fibre in the area.

Gungahlin residents offered time with NBN Co

Gungahlin was selected as a second release site for Australia's National Broadband Network, with the rollout planned to begin in the second quarter of next year.

NBN Co community and stakeholder relations manager Glenn Holdstock was due to front the meeting with residents.

The company was also expected to meet with territory and federal representatives and local businesses while in Canberra.

"This an opportunity for the Gungahlin community to drive the roll out of high-speed broadband, ensuring NBN delivers in service areas important to Gungahlin residents," Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh said in a statement.

Residents in Gungahlin have long suffered internet speed problems.

Telstra recently upgraded several exchanges in the area after years of grassroots lobbying.

ACT Senator Kate Lundy has also lobbied NBN Co and the Communications Minister to prioritise the Canberra suburb of Gungahlin in the NBN rollout.

The consultation will be held by the Gungahlin Community Council at Palmerston Community Centre on October 13, 2010 at 7.30pm.
