Telecommunications provider Macquarie Telecom has launched a managed service to protect its internet customers from viruses and spam at a network level.

Telecommunications provider Macquarie Telecom has launched a managed service to protect its internet customers from viruses and spam at a network level.

“Just as you expect clean water when you turn on the tap, you should be able to expect clean internet from your internet service. However, this is far from reality today,” said Glen Noble, general manager of Macquarie Telecom Data & Hosting.

The service, called Clean Internet, is aimed at business and government sectors and comprises network level virus protection, anti-spam and content filtering that aims to stop unwanted content before it reaches the local network.

As part of the service, detailed monthly reports on spam and virus activity are generated to allow customers to refine security polices.

Macquarie Telecom said Clean Internet had reduced network traffic more than 22 percent in a week for one Australian organisation.

Of 120,000 emails, about 8500 viruses were stopped and 18,730 emails were quarantined as spam.
