Financial details of the purchase weren't disclosed.

The mobile analytics software from Openwave Systems aggregates mobile subscriber data and behavioural information from across the network.

Data sources include portal and open internet browsing, mobile email messaging, video and audio streaming, device type, demographics and location, according to Openwave.

Telstra hopes to use it to better understand mobile data usage, view mobile traffic patterns and make adjustments accordingly to optimise their network assets.

But it can also be used to "deliver targeted content to users and monetise relevant services", Openwave said.

"[It] enables an operator to monetise their detailed knowledge of their subscriber base in order to unlock innovative new revenue streams," the software developer said.
