The federal government has launched a website that aims to educate children about safe internet practices.
A statement from communications, IT and the Arts minister Daryl Williams said that the current government supported community education.
“These initiatives are vital in making the online environment safer for children,” it stated.
The website, (http://www.nettysworld.com.au), will have internet security safety tips, and also teaches children about dangers associated with meeting strangers who contact them online.
“It teaches children what to do if they find content that is worrying, as well as ways to protect their identity and personal details online,” according to the statement.
The site was launched today – Friday 6 February – to coincide with Safer Internet Day and is part of an Australia-wide campaign about internet safety.
Safer Internet Day is an initiative of a project in the European Commission's Safer Internet Program, called SafeBorders.
The Australian website was designed to complement other federal government measures to educate children about safer internet practices, the statement said.
