  Editor's Note

Good afternoon,

In today's featured tweets [scroll below], you'll find a familar argument between a well-known CIO, an analyst and myself about the latest executive to threaten CIO authority and budget, the 'Chief Digital Officer'.

I conversed on this at length with a dozen CIOs at a recent lunch iTnews hosted to meet Splunk CEO and President Godfrey Sullivan - click here to read our summary.

Oh, and if you're in Federal Government IT, this week's iToon is for you!

@iTnews_au "Isnt a CIO already doing digital business? Isn't the "I" enabled by digital? So why is CDO better? http://t.co/KhQn8sxs9j

@AndiMann

@vforte64 @BeTheMedia Sure, many are. All IT is digital, but many CIOs also lead new 'digital' tech eg cloud, SaaS, mobile, apps, web, etc.

AndiMann

@AndiMann

@vforte64 @BeTheMedia But data suggests many CIOs don't lead new digital adoption. CMO, Sales, Field are driving. That is where CDO comes in

@vforte64

@AndiMann @BeTheMedia Great. Yes we do. So now we are #CDO's? Businesses are confused with the #CIO role. How does this help?

AndiMann

Andi Mann

@AndiMann

@vforte64 @BeTheMedia So yes, many good CIOs are already CDOs. But many may need a CDO to partner with, at least for the short term.

@AndiMann

@vforte64 @BeTheMedia It can help business adopt new tech strategically, rather than tactically. If CIO is not already doing that.

@breditor

@vforte64 The whole 'CDO' vs 'CIO' narrative too often assumes that the CIO is a brown cardigan mainframe hugger. Its meaningless.

@breditor

@AndiMann @vforte64 @BeTheMedia the only CDOs I have ever interviewed do little more than collect requirements. Guess who has to deliver?

@AndiMann

@breditor @vforte64 @BeTheMedia Interesting, logical. CDO should be a partner w/ CIO and IT. But maybe a matrix to org-wide resources too?
