It has been a big week for government control of telecommunications as authorities and telcos tussle over the nature of a proposed data retention regime in Australia.

Senator Stephen Conroy has promised his own form of intervention, threatening to build a government-funded submarine link to the US if the industry doesn't drop prices. We explore whether his claims are correct (but won't judge his favourite coloured underpants).
