EDITOR'S NOTE

Welcome to the last iTnews Security bulletin for 2011.

Today we look at the stories that made 2011 a fascinating year for the InfoSec business.

Without a doubt, attacks on the Sony Playstation Network and security vendor RSA Systems set the tone of a year in which confidence was shaken in IT security at both consumer and enterprise level. The Playstation Network forced the reset of a whopping 77 million usernames and passwords, while the RSA hack forced many large organisations - including Australia's banks - to reconsider their security arsenal.

Resellers of digital certificates also felt the impact of security breaches, with one such attack relegating Diginotar bankrupt.

There was a flurry of local InfoSec news late in the year - Telstra shut down its BigPond systems in response to SaaS-hosted customer data being indexed on Google and Prime Minister Gillard's department wrestled control of cyber security from a demoted Attorney-General.

A big thanks to SC Magazine editor Darren Pauli, who wrote most of our biggest security stories, capping off the year with some big stories on identity theft involving the ATO, ANZ, Australia's telcos and superannuation firms.

Feel free to reach out to Darren with your InfoSec tips.
