EDITOR'S NOTE

Good Afternoon,

While it is not yet operational for another month, the Basslink fibre optic connection between the Australian mainland and Tasmania looks set to finally yield some fruit for Tasmanian users.

Adelaide-based Internode has announced that it has struck a deal with Basslink Telecoms which will see the ISP scale back its dependence on Telstra.

Telstra has long been accused of milking its virtual monopoly in Tasmania. Tasmania's lack of connectivity options to the mainland is estimated by analyst Paul Budde to be costing the state some $200 million a year.
