Good afternoon,

Deep Packet Inspection, the same technology that can potentially be used to filter illegal web content, is also on trial overseas as a means of serving internet subscribers targeted ads based on their web surfing habits.

BT has already dipped it's toes in the DPI water via a partnership with behavioural marketing pioneers Phorm, but has met a brick wall of opposition, as today's lead story illustrates.

In my past interviews with the managing directors of Telstra and Internode, both indicated they aren't at all opposed to using DPI for such purposes - even while simultaneously opposing the filtering of web content.
